Auto Coverage

I split an auto policy into its separate parts, so you can see what pays and what quietly does not.

What You Are Buying

What you buy is never one single thing. Think of it as several small promises stapled together, each written for a different way a drive can go wrong. The state demands a few, a lender insists on others, and the remainder is yours to pick.

I find the whole document far easier to judge once those promises are pulled apart. Below I take each common piece alone and tell you what it pays, where it quits, and who tends to need it.

Liability

When a crash is ruled your fault, this is the piece that answers to the other driver for repairs and treatment. Whatever runs past the limit you picked turns into money you owe out of your own account.

  • Repairs to the car you struck, or the fence behind it
  • Treatment for anyone riding in the other vehicle
  • A lawyer if that driver decides to take you to court

Collision

This one pays for your own car once it meets something solid, whether that is a bumper, a guardrail, or a concrete post nobody saw. Blame makes no difference to whether it answers.

  • Bodywork after you clip another vehicle
  • Damage from hitting something that never moved
  • A car put back together after it rolls

Weather And Theft

Cars get ruined standing perfectly still, and this is the piece that answers for that. Hail across the roof, a limb through the glass, or an empty space where you parked last night.

  • Storm damage from hail, high wind, or rising water
  • A stolen car, or one pried open overnight
  • Cracked glass and collisions with wildlife

The Uninsured Driver

Some drivers carry nothing at all, and others carry so little that it runs dry within minutes. This piece pays when the person who wrecked your week cannot, so the chase never falls to you.

  • Repairs when the driver at fault holds no policy
  • Medical bills once their thin limit is spent
  • A crash where the other car simply drove off

Medical Bills

Treatment for you and whoever was riding along gets paid here, and the question of blame never enters it. That matters, because settling fault can drag on well past the first invoice from the hospital.

  • Ambulance and emergency room care that night
  • Later appointments for the people you were driving
  • Invoices that land while blame is still unsettled

Roadside Rescue

A puncture miles from town, a battery that gave up in the cold, keys glinting behind locked glass. None of it is dramatic, yet it is usually the cheapest line you will ever add.

  • A tow to the nearest garage when nothing turns over
  • A jump start, a can of fuel, or a way back inside
  • Someone to fit the spare while you wait

What Sets Your Price

The Vehicle

What your car costs to fix, how quickly parts arrive, and how often thieves go looking for that model all shape the number. Two cars sharing one driveway can price worlds apart before anyone turns a key.

Your Mileage

How many miles you rack up, the roads you take, and where the car spends the night. Something parked six days a week is simply not the same bet as one crossing town twice daily.

The Record

Old claims and tickets sit on your file for a spell, though their grip loosens as time passes. That is why something from years back rarely stings the way last month would.

The Household

Anyone who reaches for those keys with any regularity belongs on the policy. A newly licensed teenager sends the figure up fast, and hiding that name can sink a claim later.

The Deductible

Agree to hand over more on the day of a claim and your monthly figure drops. It is an honest trade, though it only works if that cash is truly there when metal meets metal.

The Extras

Rental coverage, gap protection, and roadside rescue each cost a little alone. Priced one at a time you can weigh them, which beats swallowing them as a single bundled line.

Picking Your Limits

The state minimum is a doorway, not a destination. Lawmakers set it so cars could legally roll, not so your house and savings would survive one bad afternoon.

One ugly crash can sail past a thin limit within an afternoon, and every dollar over that mark comes straight out of your pocket.

I would rather ask what a claim bigger than expected would take away from you. Answer that and picking a limit turns from guesswork into a choice you can defend.

Let Me Read It First

Hand me the policy you already carry or the quote that arrived this week, and I will walk you through every line in ordinary words before you decide.
